Average length of tenancy increases

Tenants are staying in rented accommodation longer than ever before, according to new figures from the Association of Residential Lettings Agents (ARLA).

The average length of tenancy in 2009 was recorded at 16.5 months but this figure has increased by 17% over the last two years as research now shows renters are spending over 19 months in their accommodation.

ARLA has used the report to remind both tenants and landlords of the benefits associated with drawing up a comprehensive inventory at the beginning of each new letting contract.

Ian Potter, operations manager at ARLA, said that disputes over deposits can turn into headaches for all parties involved. He said: "Renters should ensure that a thorough inventory details not only the contents within the property, but the condition of them as well."

The trend for longer rental stays applies across the country, including those renting professional accommodation inLeedsand other city centres. Mr Potter said the lengthier tenancy agreements could be a reaction to the tough financial climate.
