Hyde Park’s history

Like most areas surrounding Leeds, Hyde Park has been inhabited since around 5000 BC. Historical accounts of the area talk of large oak trees being used by early settlers for shelter, firewood and timber.

One of the earliest religious sites in the region was Kirkstall Abbey, which was built on ancient Headingley. Constructed in AD 1153, the Abbey in the nearby Kirkstall area was home to many Cistercian monks until it was eventually closed during the reign of Henry VIII.

The dissolution of the Abbey led to wealthy families purchasing land in the area, which helped develop Hyde Park into a district of its own during the Industrial Revolution.
